And of course, it’s off-weekend at Claire’s karaoke, so I’m thinking I might give Ozzie’s a first try. The only thing holding me back is the thought of how long a walk home it would be, at a later hour than seems safe for the route required, which means a taxi. Other people take taxi’s all the time, I suppose I could too.

My boss at work is moving to another state, and will be working remotely from monday on. So, we are setting up facetime betwixt my ipad and her mac, in preparation for the big day. And ever since, my ipad is now making little notification sounds, even though it’s completely muted, and everything I can find about facetime in settings is set to off.

Most annoying is that I can’t see any reason for it to be making the sounds; I’m not getting call requests every five seconds, but it’s making the noise that often.

At least killing the app seems to have stopped them.

UPDATE: Killing the app didn’t make any difference. I finally tracked down that somehow, making a facetime call, turned on email notifications for gmail. WTF?

I’m back from my chocolate run, and want to grab a quick bite to eat, before I continue work on the Star Destroyer, so I stop in the nearest pub, only to find out, after ordering, that a bunch of the sales folks from work are having a little get together there as well.

It’s a little odd, listening to their conversations, to think about how they make an order of magnitude more than I do. Talking about the houses they rent out, $100,000 opportunity costs, spending a few grand of their own money to close a deal…we live in different worlds, though we work for the same place.

Their take on the financial side of the company was enlightening.

CEO of the Susan G Komen foundation, she has chosen to destroy the charity she created, by crashing it headlong onto the rocks of the abortion debate. Choosing cowardice and self-hate, she caved to Republican pressure to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood, and showed that she is willing to sacrifice the lives of millions of women.

But she isn’t just a terrible human being, she’s also a failure. Her pathetic decision has resulted in more donations for Planned Parenthood in the last two days, than they got from Susan G Komen in an entire year.

So, screw you Nancy Brinker, or rather, thank you for reminding me to donate to any cause that you oppose. And doubly screw you for what you have done to all the women with breast cancer, who will now have to find new resources, or face the moral dilemma of accepting help from the devil.

UPDATE: The Komen foundation has released a rather weasel worded change of heart, that makes it clear that they are only sorry they got caught, not that they regret trying to take away healthcare options from women. The more you learn about the Susan G Komen foundation (less than 21% of their money is spent on actual research), the more it seems like a bit of close attention to what they are actually all about, is in the best interest of everyone. I can only imagine how many people’s live would be improved if they spent even $300,000 less on Nancy Brinker’s unearned salary of $495,000. She would still be wealthy beyond the dreams of most American women, and might have some sort of ethical leg to stand on. As is, she just seems like a heartless woman who exploited the death of her sister for her own gain.

As a cartoon addict, I end up watching a lot of shows for which the advertising is entirely child-directed, which I tend to ignore. But when I saw a teen nick show preview that looked suspiciously Breakfast Club-y, I had to check it out. So far, they’ve done an amazing job of sanitizing the movie, yet still being funny. Instead of dandruff, it’s glitter that the Ally Sheedy character shakes onto her drawing (she puts the glitter in her hair, so it’s closer than it sounds). The geeky guy has a t-shirt that says “Neo Maxi Zoom Dweebie” on it. The Vice Principle is wearing the exact outfit.

And now, they are doing the “are you a virgin” scene, only it’s “have you ever had a Taco….are you a, VEGAN?”.

Why do I suspect they won’t do a pot smoking scene. Nickelodeon won’t do that on television =p

LOL, the geeky guy does the “you’re so conceited” line, without any context. One for the parents.

So they are substituting tacos for sex AND weed. Victoria shoves the grocery bag sized bag of tacos, in the geeky kids pants…I foresee a burning tacos joke in the future, but I was wrong. Time constraints of a 30 min show I suppose.

When she’s locked in the janitor’s closet, there’s a ladder, with a sign that says “Secret Passageway To Library”.

“You ever had a taco around here?”

“Robbie’s trying to tell me that sometimes you and he crunch the corn shell together”

I wonder what the Judd Nelson-alike usually looks like. He’s doing a really good job of having the attitude, well the g-version of the attitude, limited by the fact that he’s not the title character, who’s getting Judd’s best scenes in the original. The clothes are spot on.

Robbie does the fish gobble where smoke would be, if the taco was a joint. It must seem incomprehensible to someone who has never seen the original.

And he does the “so conceited” line again.

Instead of the lipstick boobie trick, she can fire a little bow and arrow with her feet. Well, it’s teen nick.

They are doing a lot of the dancing exactly like the original.

But they do the makeover on the geeky boy…does he usually try to get touchy-feely with the judd-nelson alike?

Well, I laughed.

Re-watched Down Periscope, hi there Patton Oswalt, being all quiet and background-y.

Cowboys and Aliens was an OK movie, probably a good flick for the big screen, just an OK flick for a home theater of less than heroic proportions. Plot holes the size of a bus, character’s whose primary motivations change on whims, and lots of stuff blown up real good. And grit, lots of grit. Sometimes I thought Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford were having a squinting contest.

Captain America was similarly engaging entertainment, fun in the moment, but nothing that will stick with me, beyond a vague sense of contented satiety.

The final Harry Potter, I will need to rewatch more than once, while not primarily occupied with Lego construction. It seemed to tie everything together, killing off characters left and right, while leaving some unscathed for the final epilogue scene, I’m sure satisfying in it’s mundane suburban fantasy to most fans, but for someone without the path of kids and family before them, it seems childish and hollow. Which is probably a good thing.

The Green Lantern was the least engaging of the weekend’s entertainments, with the oddly reminiscent of the second new Hulk film’s disfigured scientist sub-plot. Like many super-hero films, without a proper grounding in the mythos, too much of the film comes across as contrived and artificial. And the you-know-they-won’t-make-a-sequel-now, kiss of death, setup for the next crisis ending. I’m still waiting for the second Flash Gordon film; by the time they get to covering who picked up Ming’s ring, we might have the technology to bring back Freddie Mercury for the soundtrack album.
