Tivo new feature wish

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Instead of coming up with yet another way to force me to view the ads you were supposed to free me from, how about you implement a useful feature.  I came home today to find my Tivo recording two different local newscasts at the same time.  Never mind that I delete 90% of the local news it records unwatched, because it’s days old by the time I notice Tivo recorded it.  The feature I want is some intelligence about unrequested auto-recorded news programs.  If it’s more than 6 hours old, delete it.  Is there really some Tivo dev that thinks people are going to go back to the local news from 4 days ago, that I didn’t ask you to record in the first place?

I wonder if MythTV supports that kind of sensible space management system…

Obsolete Tech Lives On

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I wonder how many kids will ask their parents why there’s a bump on the back of the Tivo plush doll, having grown up in a world with CRTs, and their range-requiring electron guns.

Co-Inky Dinkle Day

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Yesterday, I was telling someone about the similarity between an unreleased Dreamcast game, and Crimson Skies for the original Xbox.

Today, I’m watching 2.5 Men, and Charlie has just bought the same game to play with Jake.  Tivo says the episode is from 2005, but according to the box, the game came out in 2002.  Weird.

UPDATE:  OK, now it’s getting spooky.  Just the other day, I found out that Piero Umiliani wrote the Seasme Street Mah Na Mah Na song, for a soft-core porno.  Charlie is singing it in the car to annoy Alan.

Pity The Tivo Dev

Friday, April 17th, 2009

You’ve got to feel sorry for the Tivo devs and pgms.  99% of the time, if they didn’t screw something up years ago, they really don’t have anything to do that needs to be done.  The box displays TV, plays music, does Youtube, and it works reasonably consistently.  Until they come up with 3D TV, there’s nothing new to do.  But no one wants to walk away from their job, so they invent silly stuff to try and justify their salary.   Today, they added a little pop-up video style box whenever you pause a program, that lets you drill into a bunch of info about the show you are watching.  Sounds nice, except, I have a PC with an internet connection; I can google on it, and then I don’t have to pause what I’m watching.  I’m sure there are some people out there with a Tivo, and an internet connection, but not a computer.  Like 2 or 3.

Tivo Fails to record Saturday Night Live

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

The error it gives in the ToDo list’s history function is “this program was not recorded because it was no longer in the program guide”, which is a lie, since I was able to see the listing in the guide still, the next morning. ah suxor.

SNL may be hit and miss, but I’m always interested in seeing what Steve Martin is up to these days.
