It only took about 6 hours of looking, spread across 2 days, but I finally found the correct cable and adapter so I can hook up one of my older laptops directly to my TV, for Amazon Prime viewing. And I actually got a couple of boxes worth of un-sorted stuff put away in the process, so the exercise was more productive than I make it sound at first. On the other hand, halfway through, I realized a potential efficiency improvement for my outlet-splitting situation, but still can’t remember where I saw the key component for the new vision. It’s somewhere in the place, I’ve seen it within the last 7 days, I’m sure of it.

I’m also sure I accidentally buried it while questing for the VGA male-to-male adapter. d’oh.

I love the internet, most of the time.

Like when it can supply me with not just the name of a half-remembered tv-miniseries, but the entirety of it. Mark Harmon has had a long career, even if I don’t realize it sometimes.

The film is just as over-the-top-silly as I remembered it. Caricature villains, a rigid social structure under autocratic rule offered up as a impossible utopia to the messiness of a real world under democracy, doomed by the frailties of human ego.

And yet, it still manages to age remarkable well. It helps that 90% of their time is spent on a liner built during WW2.

Most annoying plot hole is the whole “it’ll never work” rigmarole over the heat exchanger. What exactly did the script writer think the difference was between a heat exchanger based on lava, and a scotch boiler based on oil? Pointing out that simply generating more oxygen doesn’t remove carbon-dioxide would have been more believable. Whatever.

Finally found the right search terms to find another childhood book series I only half remembered. Turns out it was “Danny Dunn“. I could really only remember two stories’ plots, and that only pieces. One was a robot dragonfly, and the other was a cold ray that they used to cause rain, IIRC. I was about ready to spend an askme, but for once, there really was a previous question that applied to my current question, and the answer was revealed.

happy happy, joy joy
