The way it goes

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Less than 10, out of hundreds potential, are here at work today, but of course, the guy with an office directly across the hall from me is one of those 10, so I can’t just leave my door open and really crank up the tunes.

Oh well.

At least I finally got ChromeDriver to work, when everything is local. Still can’t figure out what’s wrong with my remote system. One day at a time.

Step Buddy would be proud

Friday, November 11th, 2011

I once met a guy, named ‘Step’ Buddy Anderson. A retired jazz man, he’d made a book that explained what he called “The Digital Clock Game”, a book filled with a beat poetic vision of life as a game, where anytime you looked at a digital clock, you ‘got’ something. I can’t remember any of the phrases he assigned for different times, so this example is just my own made up one, “10:10 it’s that time again, 20:20 you know it’s dark honey, 12:34 see who’s at the door”. They were cute, and he talked about how you should always just be ready to make up your own phrase for any time that you caught, nor limit yourself to his suggestions for times he had covered. But key in the book was the point that you weren’t supposed to cheat at the game; you had to catch a time purely by accident, not by sitting at a clock waiting for it to occur.

And so it is with pride that I can say I managed to ‘catch’ 11:11 on 11/11/2011, in my kitchen, on the microwave.

this one’s for you Step Buddy.

Ideas from Sci-Fi

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

A researcher has ‘conceptually designed’ (whatever that means), a compressed air powered motorcycle.  I don’t remember which author came up with it, but some sci-fi author I’ve read before had an idea for using air compressed to near-degenerate matter, as fuel for surface-to-orbit shuttles, to avoid polluting the atmosphere.

You Don’t Get Sucked In At All!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Last week, I show my friend the facebook episode of south park.  As someone who abandoned facebook out of frustration at how much of a time-suck and drama-generator it was, I thought he’d find the parallels amusing.  He did.

Then I see this morning, he broke his phone, and due to lack of contact backup, has had to restart his facebook profile to regather everyone’s contact info.  LoL.

Photo Safari – St Patty’s Run

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I was headed downtown sunday to breakfast at the hurricane, when I spotted the st patty’s day run, and made a side trip to take some pictures.

There were guys in green full-body spandex suits that I saw a couple of times, the last group of walkers, some people in ‘costumes’ like a bathrobebarrels of Guinnessmohawk’d guys with cases of beer strapped to their backs, and some guy who just wanted to walk his dog in peace, and at least 1 runner who didn’t seem to be wearing any green at all. 99 was full of pedestrians in both directions well past the sky-bridge to work.

That Was Odd

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I hadn’t heard anything from my partner in the faildate in a week, no response to my one email, so there’s that and that’s just how it is, right?  Oh well, life goes on.

Last night, I’m doing my regular monday night hang out, about 75% of the way thru my 2nd and final planned drink for the eve, and he shows up.   When the B man asks if he wants anything, Q man says he’s good for now, but after we grab a table and chat for a bit, he hints that he would like something, if I’m buying of course.  I do, and he tells a tale of icky illness, and “so sorry I didn’t get back to you”.  He doesn’t want to make plans to do another date just now, but says he’ll call me later this week.  Then, his drink done, he’s out the door.

B-man points out how rude and user-y the whole incident was, I leave my counterpoint unstated.

This morning, it occurs to me how fortuitous is was for Q-man that I just happened to be there when he showed up…

Bugsy Malone and MJ

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

I was psyched to see Bugsy Malone was out on DVD finally.   All the funky goodness in wide-screen even.  I was surprised to see that Michael Jackson had a role.

UPDATE:  Not the same MJ as we all know and ‘love’.

Co-Inky Dinkle Day

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Yesterday, I was telling someone about the similarity between an unreleased Dreamcast game, and Crimson Skies for the original Xbox.

Today, I’m watching 2.5 Men, and Charlie has just bought the same game to play with Jake.  Tivo says the episode is from 2005, but according to the box, the game came out in 2002.  Weird.

UPDATE:  OK, now it’s getting spooky.  Just the other day, I found out that Piero Umiliani wrote the Seasme Street Mah Na Mah Na song, for a soft-core porno.  Charlie is singing it in the car to annoy Alan.

Small Nostalgiac World

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

20-30 years ago, halfway around the world, a boy found wonder and escape in a book that mixed science fiction, historical facts, and a very British space comic, into one memorable, albeit confusing, book.

The other day, I stop in the hobby store down the street, a once a year expedition, and find it again.  Just as I remembered.

What’s crazy is, I was about to waste an AskMe question to figure out the title, and here the actual book drops into my lap, and on sale even.
