Two bugs together == one desired feature

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Skype has developed a bug/feature where it mutes any music you have playing, at the beginning of a call. I call this a bug because they don’t let you decide if you want this feature enabled, instead forcing it on you. There’s no config option to disable this or tweak the level of muting provided.

Last.fm also developed a bug in it’s recent updates, one which probably isn’t an intended feature at all, wherein it reopens iTunes immediately after you close it.

There’s a third bug with the skype auto-mute ‘feature’ wherein it only can mute programs that were launched before the call starts.

So, you are listening to iTunes, you want to make a Skype call but keep listening at current volume, the solution is to start the call, close iTunes, let last.fm restart iTunes for you, and 2nd-gen iTunes is immune to skype’s mute attempts, and everyone is happy. Until you hang up the current call in skype and start a new call, at which point you will have to restart iTunes again.

clear as mud, right?

UPDATE: There is a fix, in Control Panel, under Sounds go to the Communications tab, and select “do nothing”. Guess it wasn’t Skype’s fault after all. d’oh.

Oh Best Buy

Tease me with an email that says, “217253 points ($4345 in reward certificates*)”, then take it back a few hours later.  Not that I deserved them, well except in a cosmic karmic re-balancing sense maybe, if you take the positive dating experience gaps in my life as importantly as I do =p

Still, a free TV bigger than my futon would have been nice.

iTunes Windows Bug, another

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Load the same album from two different locations into the library (not allowing itunes to reorg your collection), manually remove one of the dupes from the file system, and open GetInfo for a file that does exist.  Press next to move to a file that no longer exists, everything greys out, as expected, then next over to a file that does exist.  All the fields will go back to editable….except for the “part of compilation” checkbox, which stays greyed out.

As iTunes bugs go, this one is suprisingly small, and easy to work around, just cancel the info-edit, and reopen, you’ll be able to set the compilation flag as normal again.

Windows 7 Beta bugs so far

1.   Some sort of problem with the 1st-reboot virus scan between win7 and Avast Home, “interactive login failed”

2.  Sound system doesn’t turn off main speaker automatically, when headphones are plugged in.  It’s a multi-step manual process.

3.  Sounds only play when the window is in the foreground, at least for the WoW installer.

4.  The “Send Feedback” tool requires you to not just have a windows Live ID already set up, but for the LiveID to already be fully setup to give Win7 feedback (a BUNCH of non-obvious links to follow on the “connect” site), and won’t give you any feedback about why it’s failing to send your feedback, just keeps sending you to the username/password prompt.  I thought the network was broken or I’d forgotten my password at first.

The install process was very smooth.  It re-formatted the old C: no probs.  Of course, HP hasn’t put out any drivers that will install under 7, so none of the specialty buttons work, and I haven’t tried using the burner…I forget if win7 has built in dvd playback, or if I’ll still have to install a 3rd party app for that.  I saw the note on windows update about WMP killing mp3s, so I set all the local ones to read-only.
