Hard Selling

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

What is it with some businesses, that I can come in ready to ‘spend’, and they still give me the hard sell like I’m somebody they just cold called without any interest, rather than someone who came to them ready to start dealing? I find it a bit off-putting, since it seems to imply they aren’t paying much attention to what I’m saying. I will give the benefit of the doubt, and hope they are just following a script, for now.

To quote or not to quote

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Gotta love trying to come up with a single command that will do the same thing on a dozen different flavors of UNIX, that can handle embedded environmental variables AND potential embedded spaces in filenames, to be executed via a STAF “start process” command, respecting temporary alterations of the effective user/group-id.

If you double quote a string in your command, you can expand dollar-sign-variables, but you lose the tilde-username variable. If you use single-quotes, neither works. If you go without quotes, both variable types work, but you have to figure out how to safely escape spaces in your filenames, without escaping the spaces between tokens in the command itself.

It’s a problem that’s easy to solve in the particular, but seems near impossible to abstract into a universal solution. Maybe I’m just missing something obvious.

Amazon Gaga Fail

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Amazon and Lady Gaga put together what would be a pretty sweet deal to encourage people to use the new Cloud Player, if it actually worked. They are offering her latest album, they say in full, for just $0.99. The problem is, after they’ve taken your money, they only give you access to the 2 song on the album, Americano and Scheibe. Half price is still a deal, but it’s not the deal promised, and it’s not the two tracks I would have picked. We’ll see how long it takes them to clear up their mess.

UPDATE: The album was eventually available, within 24 hours for sure. And now they are giving everyone a $5 credit on anything at amazon, not just mp3’s…they are trying to recover, I’ll give them that. We’ll all get to see how apple’s cloud handles it’s opening day someday.

I heart Internet

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Sometimes I love the little synchronistic finds the internet provides. Doing some research into a local brew-ha-ha between a bunch of small minded sexists and some decent people who like sports and care about their moms/sisters/daughters, I find out that the architect of this PR fiasco is a man who Spokeo informs me is a rat. OK, born during the year of the rat, but still funny to scroll down his profile and see the section “Rat”.

other ways to say…

WTF BBQ

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

OK, they actually say they serve “burger, ice cream, and more”, but the phrase isn’t “wtf bicm”.
I say “say they serve”, because, despite having an open sign up and two people there, this new restaurant on a barge that opened up near work didn’t seem to be interested in actually selling anything. They had the gate to board closed, and when I started to ask the woman moving tables around, how to get on, she just turned her back on me and walked off.

It’s an annoying pity, since burger choices have been limited in their neighborhood for a while now. I guess I’m still going to be making the longer walk to Blue Moon Burgers.

no yakking today either

Still no one at Moss Bay to unlock the gear to go with my boat, and a perfect day weather wise, just right temps, not too much wind. sigh.

No way Moss Bay

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Grar.

I pay good money to have 24×7 access to my kayak, or one of his mates. It’s supposed to come with access to the needed accessories like lifejacket, paddle, and drybag. Someone forgot to set out the after-hours equipment, so on our finally first day above 70 degrees, when I make the trek over to take an afternoon ride, it was all for naught. And none of the staff had bothered to show up today, even though it was perfect weather for watery fun. I sure hope they at least bother to check voice mail before tomorrow afternoon. I’d hate to think they wasted the first two decent back to back days of the season entirely.

UPDATE: They did set up the after-hours bucket, and got the new seasons’ yaks in, so less chance of running out of singles for the rest of the year.

Where do the Chuzzles go?

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

I like to imagine that when the disappear from my game board, they are reappearing on-board some angry klingon vessel =)

Also the Chuzzle game looks like the didn’t test on a tablet form factor =(

That sudo that you do

Monday, May 16th, 2011

I had to explain the interactions between sudo and su to our documentation person at work, which lead to the next question I’m going to ask someone for an interview.

Setup:

in ~root/runme
echo “I ran from root home as $USER”

in ~user1/runme
echo “I ran from user1 home as $USER”

If I enter:

user1@host ~> sudo su – ./runme

what will be printed?

=)
