Quirks of Online Shopping

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I’ve been buying a bunch of toys with the make-up bonus, and noticed some interesting things with Amazon.com and sites that at first blush aren’t associated with them at all.

The first toy I wanted was some filters for my cameras.  I’d found a company that sold thru amazon’s marketplace, called 47th Street Photo, who seemed to be the sole US retailer for an asian optics company called Opteka.  Their own e-commerce website had a larger selection of products, and better prices on some things, but significantly worse prices on other things, so I ended up making two orders, one to 47th Street Photo, via Amazon, and one directly from the Opteka website.  As I get order confirmation and shipping emails about both orders, I notice that they are identical, except for the company name.  In the end, all the stuff arrived and works perfectly, but I find it amusing that I seem to have saved about $60 just by making two orders instead of one, and that both ended up processed by the same facility anyways.

The second toy I wanted was a melodica.  When I placed the order, amazon said “in stock”, delivers in 4-6 weeks…which seemed kind of odd, but the price was right, and the shipping was free.  Two months later, they send me an email saying it could be another 2 months before they ship, and do I want to cancel.  I go online and find the same melodica, from some place called American Musical Supply.   I order one from them, and it arrives two days later.  Thing is, it seems to have shipped, if not from an Amazon facility, at least from some sort of generic fulfillment center that Amazon uses.    Amazon now lists the melodica as “out-of-stock, unknown when new stock will come”.

Car stereo that connects to ipod as if it were a bluetooth headset.

There are lots of car stereos that will act as a speakerphone for your iphone.  I want to be able to get in my car, hit the blue-connect button on my car stereo, and start playing music from the ipad, without having to take it out of my gear-bag, just like how it auto-plays when I turn on my bluetooth headset.

Farm Story for iPad

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

I am mildly addicted to the game Farm Story for iDevices.  I presume it is ideologically related to the facebook farming game, but I never could get into facebook games enough to know how similar they are or are not.

They offer up the game for free, and don’t have any ads in game.  You can play fast growing plants or slow growing ones, so if you only want to touch it once a day, you can play it that way.  Where they make their money is on ‘crystal’ sales.  There are certain items you can only buy with crystals, and expanding the size of your farm is much easier with them.  Without them, you need lots and lots of ‘neighbors’.  This morning, it occurred to me that really, everyone wants more neighbors, and so anyone posting to someone’s wall asking for a neighbor will accept a friend invite from pretty much anyone.  So now, whenever I stop at a farm to water, I check the wall, and if there are any people leaving their ID, I’m sending an invite.  The response has been very fruitful.

Nothing as exciting as my encounter with Andrew ‘Dice’ Clay; saw Tom Douglas and a couple of other guys clustered around the parking pay station near his new South Lake Union restaurant.

PNB 2009 Season Encore

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Went and saw the PNB‘s 2009 Season Encore performance yesterday.  They skipped the Mopey, which I had been really looking forward to.  They also hadn’t gotten enough people to fill the upper level economically vs the staff required, so they’d re-seated everyone in 2nd tier…except they forgot the box seats.  So I ended up getting re-seated into the first tier box, for only half the price.  I’ve always wondered how those high up on the side seats would work out.   There was 1 scene where some non-dancing performers were standing so far to the close side of the stage, that I couldn’t really see them, but all the action was in perfect view, plus an extra view of the orchestra pit.  When they were about to announce canceling the Mopey, I could see someone coming to tell the conductor, before the announcer had started her announcing.

All in all, an interesting experience.  Those dancers sure have muscular legs and tight tights.  Too bad I didn’t find my binocs before I went.

UPDATE:  Looks like the ‘encore’ for the Encore was “Rug Dance” from “Ordinary Dances” by Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig.  Unfortunately, that information isn’t sufficient to find me a recording of the music  behind it =(

UPDATE2:  The guy gave me the wrong name, it’s “Ordinary Festivals”, and he’s looking into what the music was that was played.

UPDATE3:  I decided to make this show my box-seating-experience based on an email from a facebook group called “Seattle Comp Tickets”.  I saw an email that started with “PNB presents…” and ended with “featuring sinners, demons and drag queens. The Devil (played by the fabulous Anita Goodman) will be your host, as audience members are encouraged to volunteer their “sins” for judgment.”  What I didn’t notice was that the second paragraph was for a completely different show.  It seemed like a significant disconnect between what I saw, and what the e-flyer had said I’d see.  Silly me =p

Bye Bye Qwest

I kept my landline around, even after I stopped needing it for the original Tivo, as a backup for when the cable-internet goes out, and so I could participate in the Neilsen home scan program.  No more; today I finally got around to canceling ye olde POTS.  If only my apartment faced south, a direct-TV/DSL bundle might have made some sort of sense.

Advantage of a webcam mirror…

Thanks to the delay caused by the computer, unlike a real mirror, you can see yourself with your eyes closed =p

Interviews

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Been doing a bunch of one-on-one interviews at work, for a possible promotion.  It’s a little odd, since I had no idea this was coming, and don’t really have an answer to any of the “what are your plans for the team if you get the lead?” beyond, “figure out what the heck is going on”.

iPad Camera Connector kit of grar

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

So far, using it has been a trial in annoyance.  An SD card filled with movies and images is rejected as “unsupported”.  I plug in my G1 phone, and it brings up 9 out or 18 images…well, place holders for them, but never the actual images.  Nor did the menu controls to transfer the pictures ever show up.  Unplug and re-insert, and now the apple refuses to see anything on the cameraphone.  The only thing that did work was an SD card that came out of a camera, with all the regular camera directory silliness.  More annoying, it looks like it only transfers a small version of the photo to the ipad, so you can’t empty out a memory card for latter uploading to iPhoto, unless your camera resolution is very small.

oh well.
