I’m back from my chocolate run, and want to grab a quick bite to eat, before I continue work on the Star Destroyer, so I stop in the nearest pub, only to find out, after ordering, that a bunch of the sales folks from work are having a little get together there as well.

It’s a little odd, listening to their conversations, to think about how they make an order of magnitude more than I do. Talking about the houses they rent out, $100,000 opportunity costs, spending a few grand of their own money to close a deal…we live in different worlds, though we work for the same place.

Their take on the financial side of the company was enlightening.

CEO of the Susan G Komen foundation, she has chosen to destroy the charity she created, by crashing it headlong onto the rocks of the abortion debate. Choosing cowardice and self-hate, she caved to Republican pressure to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood, and showed that she is willing to sacrifice the lives of millions of women.

But she isn’t just a terrible human being, she’s also a failure. Her pathetic decision has resulted in more donations for Planned Parenthood in the last two days, than they got from Susan G Komen in an entire year.

So, screw you Nancy Brinker, or rather, thank you for reminding me to donate to any cause that you oppose. And doubly screw you for what you have done to all the women with breast cancer, who will now have to find new resources, or face the moral dilemma of accepting help from the devil.

UPDATE: The Komen foundation has released a rather weasel worded change of heart, that makes it clear that they are only sorry they got caught, not that they regret trying to take away healthcare options from women. The more you learn about the Susan G Komen foundation (less than 21% of their money is spent on actual research), the more it seems like a bit of close attention to what they are actually all about, is in the best interest of everyone. I can only imagine how many people’s live would be improved if they spent even $300,000 less on Nancy Brinker’s unearned salary of $495,000. She would still be wealthy beyond the dreams of most American women, and might have some sort of ethical leg to stand on. As is, she just seems like a heartless woman who exploited the death of her sister for her own gain.

Because when a star you have a crush on announces they are coming out, it’s obviously implied that they are looking to date a fan =p

I must be missing something obvious. AIX has a keyword, mkhomeatlogin, it seems pretty straightforward, and there’s nothing in the docs about having to do anything special to enable it, and yet when I try to turn it on, it fails:

chsec -f /etc/security/login.cfg -s usw -a mkhomeatlogin=true
3004-692 Error changing “mkhomeatlogin” to “true” : Attribute is invalid.

What’s more confusing, there doesn’t seem to be any widespread confusion over these keywords, or indeed Any difficulty that has resulted in the above error message within the context of merely activating the feature, which leads me to suspect I’m missing something obvious. I hate that feeling. But I’d rather feel foolish, and informed, that continue with the frustration.

Another part of the weekend’s nostalgia overload, a marathon session of Jason of Star Command. I had remembered the bad guy’s monocle, but there was so much I had forgotten that came back once I started watching. As a kid, I probably didn’t notice that they not only reused sound FX from Star Trek, they even reuse some of the musical cues. I’m certain as a Star Wars obsessed kid, the ‘evil’ wookie-alikes would have been notable. And now I know why the minister from Mom and Dad Save The World seemed so familiar; I was remembering him from Jason.

But the biggest ‘discovery’ was the do-anything-even-fly-through-space-yet-fit-in-a-fanny-pack robot, W1k1, aka Wiki. Wikipedia’s biography claims it comes from the Hawaiian word for quick, but obviously Jimmy Wales was a big Jason fan =p It’s a robot that is capable of interstellar travel, has a built in laser for freeing Jason from the inevitable chains in the dungeon scenes, and R2D2 like one-understandable-sided-jokes.

In addition to my Lego work over the holiday season, I also managed to finally get all my musical keyboards setup again, well 99% setup. I need to stop by the store for some more patch cables, in theory, but practically, I don’t pre-program enough stuff that I’d ever have all three machines making noises at the same time. And I could just multi-track the individual instruments in editing.

I do need to pick up some vertical support bars for the extra set of wire rack shelves, to build a little sound isolated zone in the room for recording vocals with. Thinking it’s quiet enough in that room, I just need a simple set of blankets to stop the fan noise from getting in.

I think I’ve finally reached the tipping point in the new place, where enough stuff is put away or gotten rid of, that there’s space to work on the projects that have been backing up for years.

Today, my team lead announces she is moving out of state and will be a remote employee, giving up some of her current responsibilities. I of course am filled with the likely naive hope that whomever ends up with said responsibilities will end up with a commensurate bump in income, and said someone will be me.
On re-watching, I found it still enjoyable, and was surprised to realize it also starred Eric Idle, funny what the mind forgets vs remembers. Anywho, the interesting bit to me was how, in the end credits, Eric and Robbie get a second credit line for the last drag-outfits they wore, as separate actors by their character names.

I wonder if any other movie does that.
