He's Closer Than He Seems

He Seemed Even Closer

It was a very nice day for shooting on the water.  No wind, so no waves.  I’m headed in, when the seaplanes start taking off.  I end up perfectly aligned for a nice take-off sequence.  I assume the pilot just likes to buzz the kayaks (I like it when they do, so I’m happy), and not that he could see my teeny-tiny camera from when he started his run.   Then again, he is a pilot, his eyes better be better than mine.
It was a little disconcerting, as he just keeps coming closer and closer.  He seems much further away looking at the camera screen, but I can hear him, like a bee by my ear.

Simple Rules To Save Your Life

Monday, August 4th, 2008

1. If you commute to work, you should live such that your commute is always out of the sun, rather into the sun. For a 9-5′er, this means always living east of where you work. Your ability to see what’s in front of you is highly important. The risk you are avoiding is significant. I’m really surprised the Auto Insurance folks haven’t clued into this one.

2. When walking corner-to-corner at an intersection, you should travel around the intersection opposite of the side of the road driven on (or if you rather, as if you were traveling from passenger seat to driver’s seat). For US-ains, this means traveling clockwise. This maximizes your visibility to drivers making turns across the cross-walk.

It’s always nice to hear some sane news from the world of speed limit legislation.

comics and the mundanity of life

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

They are rarely seen eating, and I’ve never shown them going to the bathroom. Do you think that they just never shit? Of course not. It’s just naturally assumed that some everyday stuff goes on around whatever is shown in the comic. Same thing with a baby (Yes, I’m comparing parenting to shitting. Can you tell I’m not a Dad?).
Oddly enough, I just kind of assumed they didn’t do those mundane things because, you know, they’re comic characters =p

I kid because I love.

respond or ignore

Friday, May 30th, 2008

It’s interesting to see the difference in visibility having a blog that’s part of the established blogosphere. When I wrote about comcast, they had a rep signing up for a comment account within 24 hours. Then there’s the differences in response by different companies. Funny how the ones who talk the biggest game about being hip and customer-focused, are the ones who never show up.

seattle 5-0

Seems I missed interrupting some thieves at work, by about an hour.  They were even in the room I first visit when I come in, when they heard one of our early risers coming in, and took off in a panic.  They left behind a fire department keycard.  Some of my cow-orkers are convinced it couldn’t be someone from the FD, but I suspect we don’t pay those guys anywhere near enough to guarantee there is no larceny in any heart.  It certainly seems an odd coincidence, when the FD was just here last week on an automated alarm call out.

Thankfully, they don’t appear to have made it to the floor with my office.  It would suck if someone stole my ‘offsite backup’ for my house-data.

wii idea

Some sort of virtual puppetteer game.  You could tie it into “being john malkovich”, if you have to have a hollywood link.

Even just a mini game for manipulating your Mii would be cool.

the kindle experience

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

To those who wonder if reading off a kindle can be as immersive an experience as a book, I’ve been working thru the mountain climb portion of “The Martians”, and finding myself often feeling a sense of vertigo, as if I were halfway up a 25,000km mountain myself.
