Checked out a new show at the Can Can, their take on the Rocky Horror Picture Show. They mix in a little bollywood, just for the quirk. I went to a 7:30 show this time. There wasn’t a bachlorette party, so things in the crowd were a little more sedate. Having a plot to follow made the show a little more narrative than last time. The cast size was the same, but they spent more time all on stage, having 3 Frankfurters at one point, and 4 or 5 pairs of Brad and Janet’s. During breaks, they would show a bollywood film in the background, it started with some sort of dream sequence involving tiki statues with flashing lights, goes thru an axe murder, and ends in a beach blanket bingo style number. Nobody spins from the ceiling like in Flux, but it was still a pretty entertaining show. At the 7:30 show, the VIP tix don’t come with alcohol, but do come with a 3 course meal. The soup was a savory vegetable concoction of some sort, I liked it. Got the broccoli salad, also tasty, with flavor completely devoid of my mortal enemy, vinegar. OK, not mortal enemy, I just don’t like it. =p The entree of my choice was the mac and cheese, this time if you picked mac and cheese, you didn’t get to pick from the three types, it was just the three cheese. Tasty as well, but not the chipotle cheddar I love so much. Can’t have everything I suppose.

Hungry for Hunger
Thursday, November 4th, 2010I had intended to hit up this place that bills itself as Seattle’s best little italian restaurant, but they didn’t open for another 15 minutes, and the menu outside Hunger looked interesting, so I went there instead.
There were three customers there before me, vs 5 staff in the front, and who knows how many in the kitchen, but they are new. Since July I think is what I overheard a waiter say to someone else who asked if reservations were required for a Saturday night (recommended but not required). I ended up trying a gnocchi small plate. The sauce was perfect, savory and rich, the right thickness to allow dredging up a little extra flavor before each bite. The gnocchi was gnocchilicious, but the star of the dish was the little chunks of veggie (I think it was pumpkin, some sort of squash)…usually I’m not a big fan of gourd-fruit’s texture, but this was cooked perfectly, not too firm, not too squishy. It worked a great counter-point to the softness of the gnocchi. I ended up way stuffed with half the dish left, so can only wonder what a big plate dish there entails. I had them box up a tart to go, ate half this morning, also very delish.
The place has a full bar, and I think I saw something about absinthe fixins. I know they have a bottle of everclear in the middle of the bar, something you don’t see too often in Washington, much less in a fancy restaurant.
Staff was friendly and attentive, but then again, I was the only customer in the place by the time my food arrived, so….

UPDATE: I’ve been past later in the evening, and it looks like the crowd picks up.
Julia’s Wallingford, meh
Tuesday, September 28th, 2010I wanted to get some food in me before I picked up yet another lusciouliscious Europa from Chocolati, so stopped by Julia’s Wallingford. I was a little annoyed that I couldn’t get a lunch menu, even though it was after 11am, but whatever, I’ll try the Chicken Fried Steak, I think.
small mistake
I would have been happier leaving and finding someplace else to eat, I think. The meat is low-grade, pounded paper thin, and covered in a mediocre breading, underneath a lackluster gravy, with nary a taste of spice to be found. The potatoes looked pretty, but were similarly under tasty. Don’t get me wrong, everything was cooked properly, just to a different level of taste than I like in my food.
Seattle Musical Restaurants
Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010First Rhoadies magically re-opens, and now I notice that the belltown Zaina‘s is closed…but there is a new location closer to core downtown. Oh change, will you ever stop?
Return of Rhodies BBQ
Friday, July 30th, 2010In one of those moments that make you question your sanity, just a little for a sec, I’m on my way to have lunch at my cheap chinese favorite, when I see signs for Rhodies BBQ. This is confusing because a couple years ago, they closed up shop without much notice, saying they were still open out in marysville North Bend, and available for catering. Someone else eventually moved into the space, but their BBQ wasn’t as good. I had to try it out, so I stopped by. The menu is definitely the Rhodies I remember, but the guy behind the counter wasn’t recognizable. The food tastes right; certainly better than the not-Rhodies that was there for a while.
Nom Nom.
Claire-oke
Friday, July 16th, 2010Karaoke at Claire’s last night was a little depressing. Annie was a no-show, again. The really cute waiter wasn’t working. It was just me and the 80 year old guy, except for when one song. Who woulda thunk that having zero advertising would pay off so well =\
Local Celebrity Run-in
Wednesday, June 16th, 2010Nothing as exciting as my encounter with Andrew ‘Dice’ Clay; saw Tom Douglas and a couple of other guys clustered around the parking pay station near his new South Lake Union restaurant.
Lunch Today – deep fried pepper burger
Thursday, May 6th, 2010Lunch today was the deep fried pepper burger at Zayda Buddy’s, with tater tots. It was quite tasty. They only deep fry the patty part, the bun is just toasted =p It was massive, and the tater tots (an extra $2 seems a bit excessive, but whatever) were the properly done that gets them nice and crunchy on the outside, while still moist and delicious on the inside. Still so many things to try on that menu, and not a single one of them ‘healthy’.
Zadya Buddy’s does a good mac and cheese
Wednesday, April 28th, 2010I’m quite intrigued at the notion of a mac and cheese pizza, but didn’t try it on the first visit, getting the ‘hot dish’ mac and cheese instead. It was quite tasty. Lots of cheesy goodness, crumbly crunchy bread bits on top that weren’t overdone, and a portion size that left me with something on my plate even after I felt properly stuffed. All in all a good meal was had.
Murphy’s Pub
Monday, April 19th, 2010I’ve been hankering for the perfect shepherd’s pie, and trying out different ones about town, lately. Sunday, I stop by Murphy’s Pub on my way home, figuring I’ll grab a quick bite, see how theirs is. I go in, and the place is fairly quiet, as to be expected on the first sunny day about 70 we’ve had in quite some time. I ask the bartendress for a menu, make my order, and get a drink to go with the meal once it comes, then start reading while I wait. At 20 minutes of waiting, I start trying to get the bartendress’ attention without being too rude. Around the 30 minute mark, she finally deigns to come over, and asks me if I want my check. At this point, my drink is still sitting untouched and completely full in front of me. I ask where my food is, and she gets all apologetic about forgetting to put the order in. I understand things happen when you are busy, but the last half hour, I’ve watched her twiddling her thumbs; she’s not been slammed with customers. grrr.
And after all that wait, it really wasn’t anything special for a shep’s pie. They do put a lot of olives on the salad that comes with it, if you like that sort of thing, but for $12.95, the portion sized seemed kinda small. Won’t be going back.
