Weird Al does Benaroya Hall?! =)

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

First Joan Rivers, and now Weird Al? Has the Seattle Symphony always been this cool, and I’ve just been unaware, or is this a sign of economic hardship, that they are booking more ‘pop’ acts out of desperation?

You’d think…

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

You’d think that if anyone would be extra careful about bothering to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, it would be an ambulance driver, but if that’s a Tri-Met ambulance, you’d be wrong apparently. Despite having tons of time to stop, and an unobstructed view for a hundred of yards in each direction, the driver refused to stop for a pedestrian already IN the crosswalk. He wasn’t on an emergency call, no lights or siren, just a careless indifference to human life. And maybe that’s it, in a sort of Nicholas Cage of Bringing Out the Dead kind of way, the driver just doesn’t care anymore, at least not until you are a patient.

Whatever his excuse, it was darned annoying, and proof that my habit of never trusting any driver (or cyclist for that matter), is the right one to have.

Nevermind

I found a local board-game playing group on Meetup, signed up for a gaming session. Then they sent out the list of games for tonight. I’ve only heard of one of them, never played any. Some appear to be games that require personal card decks.

Oh well.

Re-brand that re-brand

Monday, April 9th, 2012

One of the ‘fancy’ restaurants in my neighborhood closed up for several months, last year. When they finally reopened, they had a new name and new signage out front. Media reports suggested there had been a change of ownership. Whatever, I’m not in their target demographic, I just keep walking on by.

This weekend, I notice that they’ve gone back to the original branding. I wonder what’s up with that. I suspect they found that 99.999% of their clientele is people who come to them once a year for a special event, and those people were confused by the new name, but it’s just a guess on my part, influenced by my only noticing the re-re-branding over Easter weekend, when ‘fancy’ restaurants get lots of once-a-year visitors.

Disaster averted?

A few weeks ago, I finally got down to my bank to fill out the paperwork to switch to their ‘budget pay’ program, an every-other-Friday pay scheme that nets an extra payment per year, the kind of thing that adds up in the good direction, for a mortgage.

When I’m there, I ask the woman when they will start taking payments under the new scheme, and she assures me that it will start up this month. Except that by the end of last Friday, there was still no payment made. Looking at the paperwork, I’m now 99.999% certain she was wrong, and that if I hadn’t manually done a full month’s payment, I would have ended up ‘late’ before they notified me of their mistake.

Now I’m wishing I’d just left well-enough alone, and just done the extra payments on my own.

You are not helping

Me: I need you to move this call to fnX(), because it calls GWT.create, into the view layer, instead of the presenter layer.
Dev: Here, I replaced the call to fnX() with a direct call to GWT.create, still in the presenter layer.

Distorting Reality

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

There’s a distorting influence, within the realm of last.fm, if you are just about the only person who listens to a selection of musicians. The system marks them as similar, because you alone listen to them, even though there’s radical differences in actual style between the actual artists. So it’s amusing to see it say that Academy of St Martin in the Fields is a similar artist to Capone. I suppose they are both European.

He’s My Best Friend

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

There are many songs that I sing along to, yet never really listen to the lyrics all that closely, and so eventually discover I had a completely incorrect interpretation of the song. My understanding of the lyrics led me to think of this song as being about a closeted gay guy and his crush on his best friend.

I’d like to blame some of my confusion on originally hearing these songs on old school cassette tapes and my cheap-o boom box. I’d like to. But, “it’s palm sunday over and over”…well, I have little excuse =p

Let the machine do it

Monday, March 19th, 2012

From now on, I’m letting machines do all my office-pool-picks. Last year, I think I was last or next to last. This year, having let the computer use some sort of historical averaging method, I’m in the top five so far. Hooray for technology.

It occurs to me, as the washing machine is making the noise that says ‘replace me soon’…because I built the Lego display area as one long interlocking set of metal shelves, I’m going to have to take everything down, if I am ever to get a washer/dryer in and out of the laundry room. d’oh.
